The Macau Grand Prix showcased the Formula Regional era with a thrilling conclusion to the main race, where Theo Nael secured victory with a spectacular double overtake at Lisboa, edging out teammate Mari Boya.
Despite initial skepticism over the switch from FIA Formula 3 to Formula Regional cars in 2024, the event presented a more satisfying spectacle, hinting at a growing acceptance within the paddock of the new formula as a platform for future stars to shine.
Despite nostalgia and initial disappointment, Emanuele Pirro, President of the FIA single-seater commission, emphasized the importance of embracing change for the event’s future sustainability, underscoring the balance of speed and safety that Formula Regional offers.
The lap times in the recent main race were around 10 seconds slower than the FIA F3 cars in 2023, positioning Formula Regional cars on par with late 1990s F3 cars, addressing safety concerns and maintaining competitive racing standards.
